About us

Veg Action is a sub-group of the Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group dedicated to promoting an increase in the availability and consumption of plant-based food in the region.

The group aims to drive changes in local food systems – encouraging local and seasonal eating, buying food directly from local growers, reducing food waste, and eating more nutritious and planet-loving plant-based food

Get to know your grower

The group runs the ‘Get to Know your Grower’ directory, which lists all the local vegetable, grain, nut, legume and fruit growers in the region, their farm gates, market locations and veggie box schemes. By buying directly from our growers, we can all support local livelihoods, minimise plastic packaging, transportation, and refrigeration costs, and gain access to fresh, seasonal and nutritious food.

Working in partnership with Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health, Veg Action is bringing local food system knowledge to VCAL students in Kyneton High with support from Vic Health. Students visited Metcalf-Mini Farm to explore organic farming methods and seasonal food. In the classroom, students are learning about local growers, food systems, soil health and environmental issues arising from agriculture - including the importance of eating more vegetable proteins for planetary health.  As part of the program, the teens will learn how to turn seasonal vegetables into delicious and nutritious meals and reduce food waste.

Edgy Veg Awards

The group also runs the annual Edgy Veg Awards, supporting eateries in the Ranges to experiment and innovate with plant-based food, submitting their creations for popular vote during the Edgy Veg Trail. 2023 winners for the ‘Most delicious plant-based dishes’ included The Corner Boutique Coffee Bar in Gisborne, Sizzler Restobar in Woodend, Flying Pigeon in Gisborne, and Social Foundry in Kyneton won the ‘Most veg-friendly eatery’ award. Over 700 scores were collated from residents and visitors alike to determine the winners. This initiative supports local business development and provides residents with the opportunity to try delicious and sustainable plant-based meals cooked by the best chefs in the region.

Social events

Veg Action also organizes social events, potlucks, and meetups where individuals can connect, share experiences, and find support on their plant-based journey. Get in touch if you want to volunteer with us or come to our events.
